Steve Wozniak, Elon Musk and more than 1 other big names have signed an open letter demanding an immediate six-month halt to AI technologies more powerful than ChatGPT-000.

This year is the year that artificial intelligence like ChatGPT and Google Bard became a major trend. Although all AI companies refer to their products as experiments or indeed certain beta versions, their features are integrated into many services. The Future of Life Institute is now calling for a "public and verifiable" pause involving "all key players" in the field. If such a pause cannot be implemented quickly, governments should step in and impose a moratorium.

The Future of Life Institute's goal is to "direct transformative technologies to benefit life and steer them away from extreme risks on a large scale." The aforementioned 600-word letter, which is addressed to all AI developers, states that it is necessary to take a break because in recent months artificial intelligence labs spiraled out of control and began developing and deploying increasingly powerful digital brains that no one, not even their creators, could understand, predict, or reliably control.

"AI labs and independent experts should use this pause to jointly develop and implement a set of shared security protocols for the design and development of advanced artificial intelligence, which would be strictly controlled and overseen by independent external experts." the message continues. "These protocols should ensure that the systems that follow them are secure beyond all doubt."

However, this does not mean a halt to the development of artificial intelligence in general, it should only be a retreat from the dangerous race for ever-larger unpredictable black-box models with emergent capabilities. The letter was signed by 1 personalities, such as:

  • Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, Tesla and Twitter
  • steve wozniak co-founder of the company Apple
  • Jaan Tallinn, co-founder of Skype
  • Evan Sharp, co-founder of Pinterest
