Meta will finally allow Facebook and Instagram users to opt out of being tracked for targeted ads on their platforms. It made this decision after receiving millions of dollars in fines from European regulators. Although Meta first threatened to withdraw Facebook and Instagram from the European market, this did not happen in the end and now they have to follow EU laws.

According to the website SamMobile citing The Wall Street Journal, Meta will allow its EU users to avoid tracking for advertising purposes starting this Wednesday. Users will be able to choose a version of its services that would only target them with ads based on general categories, such as age range and general location, without using data like it does now, such as the videos users watch or content on which in the Meta applications they click.

This option may sound good "on paper", but there is a catch. And for some, it will literally be a "hook". The process of unfollowing Meta on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram will not be easy at all.

Users will first need to fill out a form to object to Meta using their in-app activities for advertising purposes. After sending it, Meta evaluates it and decides whether to grant the request or not. So it looks like she's not going to give up without a fight, and even if she offers the option to opt out, she'll have the final say.

In addition, Meta said it will continue to appeal the standards and fines imposed by EU regulators, but in the meantime it is obliged to comply with them. However, it should be noted that the mentioned untracking procedure could lead to new complaints against the company.
