WhatsApp has long been the leader in instant messaging and has been working to make it even better lately. For several years now, the creator of the app, Meta, has been trying to make it possible to use it on multiple devices at once. First came the web interface, and then the ability to use the account on one primary device and up to four other connected devices, but between which there could only be one smartphone. That is finally changing now.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, on Facebook yesterday he announced, that it is now possible to use one WhatsApp account on up to four other phones. To enable this feature, the app had to go through a complete redesign of its core architecture.

With a redesigned architecture, each connected device communicates with WhatsApp servers independently to keep chats in sync. This also means that your primary smartphone needs to connect to the internet at least once a month to keep the connected devices working, otherwise it can stay turned off. Meta promises that end-to-end encryption will remain available regardless of which device you use to sign in to your account.

The new feature will benefit not only those who regularly "juggle" multiple smartphones (such as tech website editors), but also smaller companies, as members of their teams can use the same WhatsApp Business account to handle multiple customer inquiries more than once.
