If you love playing mobile games, you'll be interested in Qualcomm's new scaling tool called Snapdragon Game Super Resolution, or GSR. The chip giant claims the tool maximizes mobile gaming performance and battery life.

GSR is one of the many upscaling techniques available for mobile games that allow you to rescale an image from a lower resolution to a higher, native resolution to improve performance without draining your battery. However, GSR uses a more efficient approach to increase resolution.

According to Qualcomm, GSR is a single-pass spatial super-resolution technique that achieves optimal upscaling quality while maximizing performance and power savings. The tool handles antialiasing and scaling in one pass, reducing battery consumption. It can even be combined with other post-processing effects such as tone mapping to increase the performance even more.

Put simply, GSR allows Full HD games to become sharper, 4K games. Games that only run at 30 fps can be played at 60 fps or more, making the graphics look even smoother. None of these performance improvements come at the expense of battery life. GSR works best with Qualcomm's Adreno graphics chip, as the tool has specific optimizations for it. However, the company claims that the GSR works with most other mobile graphics chips.

The only current game that supports GSR is Jade Dynasty: New Fantasy. However, Qualcomm has assured that more GSRs supporting titles will arrive later this year. Among others will be Farming Simulator 23 Mobile or Naraka Mobile.
