Samsung he announced its earnings for the first quarter of this year. And unfortunately, they are in line with his estimates, which he published earlier. The operating profit of the Korean giant decreased by 95% year-on-year. Weak demand for chips in particular is behind its lowest profit of any quarter in 14 years.

Samsung reported revenue of 63,75 trillion won (roughly CZK 1 trillion) in the last quarter, down 18% year-on-year. Operating profit reached 640 billion won (about 10,2 billion CZK), which represents a 95% year-on-year decrease.

The main reason for Samsung's weak profit in the first quarter of this year is insufficient demand for chip products. Its chip division recorded a loss of 4,58 billion in the period in question. won (approx. CZK 72,6 billion) as demand has dropped considerably and memory chip prices have fallen by almost 70% over the past nine months. In addition, Samsung does not expect the situation to improve significantly in the current quarter, it only expects some recovery. He estimates that tech companies may start stockpiling chips before the third quarter, which could help boost nominal earnings.

The mobile division fared much better. Its sales rose 22% year-on-year in the first quarter, and operating profit rose 3%. This is a testament to the series' success Galaxy S23, as Samsung highlights that its current "flagship" has very strong sales.
