Not all of us want to spend a "bundle" on a high-end smartphone, but thanks to Samsung and Google's mid-range offerings, we don't have to. Galaxy The A54 5G corrects some of the shortcomings of its predecessor (mainly in terms of performance and night photography), and the Pixel 7a, presented at the Google I/O developer conference on Wednesday, continues the legacy of its predecessor, the Pixel 6a. Let's compare both phones side by side and then decide which one is more advantageous.

Design

If you Galaxy The A54 5G and Pixel 7a look familiar, that's because their design was visibly inspired by the series Galaxy The S23 (more precisely, the S23 and S23+ models) and the Pixel 7. Both are relatively compact by today's standards, with the Pixel 7a being slightly wider and smaller and 0,8 millimeters thicker. Both boast clean, elegant lines and attractive color options.

Galaxy The A54 5G also adds a premium element in the form of a glass back (the Pixel 7a has a plastic back). On the other hand, it has Galaxy A54 5G plastic frame, while Pixel 7a metal.

Display

Differences can also be found in the display area. Screen Galaxy The A54 5G is 6,4 inches in size, while the Pixel 7a's display is 0,3 inches smaller. The Pixel 7a also has a lower refresh rate (90 vs 120 Hz). Both displays are otherwise built on similar technology (u Galaxy A54 5G is Super AMOLED and in Pixel 7a it is gOLED) and they have the same resolution – FHD+ (in Galaxy A54 5G it is specifically 1080 x 2340 px, for the Pixel 7 1080 x 2400 px). The quality of the displays of both phones is otherwise comparable, i.e. top-notch, with the fact that the Samsung representative offers slightly better visibility in direct sunlight.

Performance

Galaxy The A54 5G is powered by the new Exynos 1380 chipset, which provides absolutely enough performance for all conceivable tasks. The Pixel 7a uses the same chip as the Pixel 7 series, the Google Tensor G2. This chip has comparable performance to Samsung's latest flagship chipset, the Exynos 2200, and is therefore significantly faster than the Exynos 1380. So if you want to play more demanding games, for example, the Pixel 7a is a better choice than Galaxy A54 5G.

Cameras

Galaxy The A54 has a triple camera with a resolution of 50, 12 and 5 MPx (the second serves as an ultra-wide-angle lens and the third as a macro camera), while the Pixel 7a has a double with a resolution of 64 and 13 MPx (the second serves as the "wide-angle"). The new Pixel's camera boasts advanced artificial intelligence algorithms, thanks to which it captures high-contrast, color-accurate images. Galaxy The A54 5G doesn't produce as high-quality photos as its rival, but it's not too far behind. The difference can be seen especially in photos taken in poorer lighting conditions, when Galaxy The A54 5G occasionally "produces" a slightly blurry and noisy image. However, if you only take photos on your mobile phone occasionally, you will be with a camera Galaxy A54 5G extremely satisfied.

Keep holding on

The Pixel 7a's battery has a capacity of 4385 mAh, which is slightly less than the Pixel 6a's, but thanks to the improved efficiency of the newer chipset, the Pixel 7a offers slightly better battery life, namely - with normal use - all day. On the other hand, it has the same "fast" charging (18W), so its full charge is very slow for today. However, it at least partially compensates for this shortcoming by supporting wireless charging with a power of 5 W.

Regarding Galaxy A54 5G, its battery received a capacity of 5000 mAh. This, in combination with a relatively energy-efficient chipset, guarantees a two-day endurance in normal use. Although the phone "can" charge slightly faster, namely 25 W, unlike the Pixel 7a, it does not support wireless charging.

Software

Pixel 7a software runs on Androidat 13, Galaxy A54 5G on the One UI 5.1 superstructure based on it. Samsung has long been pushing its own on its phones androidov applications and it is true that they offer user-friendly and efficient interfaces. So if you decide to Galaxy A54 5G, try its native apps because you might really like them. However, many users ignore the Korean giant's default apps and use standard pro apps instead Android or more customizable third-party software. On Galaxy The A54 5G also has what could be considered bloatware over the Pixel 7a, like AR Zone or Bixby, but that's fairly easy to uninstall if it bothers you.

Verdict

So which phone is better? There is no definite answer to this, as both have their strengths and weaknesses. The Pixel 7a is slightly better "on paper", mainly due to its better performance, camera and integrated software. On the other hand, it is a bit more expensive, as it is sold in the USA for 499 dollars (just under 11 thousand CZK), whereas Galaxy A54 5G for $450 (about CZK 9; it can be found here for a similar price). The key question, however, is whether the Pixel 700 will reach the Czech Republic at all. If not, this whole comparison was just academic. In Europe, however, the phone is sold in Germany, where it costs 509 euros (roughly 12 thousand CZK).
