Although one of the big news of Wednesday's developer conference Google I/O was a clock system Wear OS 4, until its release you can expect several updates, especially those related to tiles. What exactly is it about?

Version 1.2 of the Jetpack Tiles library allows developers to add animations to tiles. Specifically, these are the two types of animations:

  • Tween-type animations that "create smooth transitions when part of your layout changes", such as the goal/status circle often used by fitness apps.
  • Transition animations that "animate new or disappearing elements from the tile", such as when the weather forecast is updated.

Additionally, this new library allows tiles to use platform data sources such as heart rate, step count, or time to update once per second.

In addition, Google announced that in addition to Gmail and Calendar for Wear OS, which watch app with this system will arrive later this year, we can expect new tiles for Spotify, which will allow users to watch and start the latest episodes of podcasts, frequently played albums and get access to the new Spotify DJ "personal DJ" feature. Several new tiles are also offered by WhatsApp beta versions and one new one by the popular fitness app Peloton. Specifically, it offers an additional tile to "track your exercise streak."
