A large number of smartphone manufacturers are moving towards 1″ camera sensors as part of their development, while maintaining the 50MPx resolution of their flagship devices. However, Samsung's approach is different. It uses a much smaller sensor than many competitors, but it has a resolution of 200 MPx and the last informace indicate that this will continue to be the case in the coming years.

There have been rumors in the past that Galaxy The S24 Ultra will continue to use a 200MPx camera sensor. New communications claim that i Galaxy S25 Ultra and Galaxy The S26 Ultra will use the same resolution sensor. Both smartphones will reportedly feature a slightly improved 17nm ISOCELL HP2 image sensor with 200 MPx and improved light capture. Future model Galaxy The S27 Ultra, on the other hand, could use a larger, 1/1,12″ ISOCELL sensor. This could lead to a situation where Apple it may offer a 1″ camera sensor before its Korean rival.

No details on the camera sensor though Galaxy The S27 Ultra is unknown for now, it could be an upgraded version of the 1/1,12″ ISOCELL GN2 that was last launched two years ago and used in the Xiaomi 11 Ultra. At the moment, it is more of a prediction based on currently available information, because a number of factors can enter such long-term plans that will cause a change in approach or lead to its re-evaluation. If the current assumptions about the camera Galaxy S27 Ultra confirmed, this would mean it would take three years for Samsung to approach 1″ sensor size.

The 50Mpx one-inch sensor strikes a great balance between pixel size and resolution that's sufficient for 8K stills and video recording while keeping pixels large enough to capture the right amount of light without pixel binning. We'll see what the future holds.
