During the annual Display Week in Los Angeles, Samsung unveiled a potentially revolutionary 12,4-inch rollable OLED panel. Sure, it's not the first time we've seen this concept, but Samsung's is a step ahead of the competition as it's the biggest yet and rolls from a relatively small 'scroll'.

The panel can range in size from 49mm to 254,4mm, an impressive five-fold scalability compared to current sliding screens that can only reach three times their original size. Samsung Display says it was able to achieve this by using an O-shaped axis that just mimics a roll of paper. The company calls it Rollable Flex.

But that's not all. In addition to the Rollable Flex, Samsung introduced the Flex In & Out OLED panel, which can bend in both directions, unlike the currently used technology that allows flexible OLEDs to be folded in only one direction. An example is their own Galaxy Samsung's Flip4 and Fold4.

To make matters worse, the Korean giant also introduced the world's first OLED panel with an integrated fingerprint reader and heart rate sensor. Current implementations rely on a small sensor area, while the company's presented solution allows the device to be unlocked by touching a finger anywhere on the surface of the screen. It also has a built-in organic photodiode (OPD) that can evaluate blood pressure, heart rate and stress by tracking blood vessels.

Now all we have to do is wait for Samsung to introduce new products into commercial products. At least Flex In & Out has a clear application in mobile jigsaws, which would thus get another dimension of its possible use. After all, they could also get rid of the external display and thus be cheaper.
