If you were hoping Samsung would break free and show us a significantly bolder fifth-generation foldable device, your disappointment was inevitable. Galaxy From Fold5 a Galaxy Z Flip5 sticks to a proven concept, although it is true that even considering the most innovative area of development in the entire mobile industry, it is a bit boring.

Apart from the larger external screen on the Flip, a flatter hinge, new colors and then actually just internal hardware improvements, you would have a hard time distinguishing these new products from their predecessors. Evolution is gradual and takes years. You could easily go back two or maybe even three generations and still try to find that compelling reason to upgrade to a new model. The slow pace of innovation here is broadly similar to the iPhone – which is pretty sad for a fledgling form factor in the industry.

Where is the competition?

Looking back, Samsung took a lot of risks over the past years and it mostly worked out. The Note series and the S Pen found a home among the most demanding users, while the Note Edge display from 2014 helped kick-start the long-running curved panel trend. Advice Galaxy The S has gone through several well-received redesigns, from the ground-breaking S2 and S3 to the more refined S6, S8 to modern models. Even the original Z Fold was a very big risk, suffering from many imperfections, but they were gradually ironed out and now we have a really great device.

Samsung is definitely not resting on its laurels, it just doesn't completely fix what isn't broken, because nothing really pushes it anywhere. There are still few alternatives on the market that would give Samsung engineers sleepless nights. Google's Pixel Fold may be trying, but its limited distribution is the same problem that all Chinese production suffers from. Perhaps only Motorola will stick out its horns, but very slowly and only with a clamshell form factor. Huawei does not have 5G or Google services.

It simply follows that Samsung is still the best choice in the world of flexible phones, when the manufacturer does not push anything anywhere. Even if he wanted to and could offer the equivalent of an affordable one Galaxy From the Fold FE to support mass expansion, why would it stop favoring higher profit margins on its current high-end portfolio? It's like iPhones when it doesn't have Apple a reason to discount when his phones go to hell. Although they certainly have their competition, Apple he does his own thing and doesn't look too far to the right or left. iOS because they only have iPhones, which the manufacturer also relies on to a certain extent and thus makes iPhones exclusive.

It's an expensive joke

The problem with jigsaw puzzles is that the hardware and development costs associated with them are still too high. Displays and hinges don't come cheap, and are probably the main reasons we're yet to see anyone push Samsung beyond just the price of the resulting phone. And that's not to mention messy applications for large and small displays that deserve more care. This is precisely the thing that, in the case of Apple, we can be sure that it will be perfected, if the company ever presents a puzzle at all. Simply put: It's not easy to ensure the smooth functioning of folding devices, so we shouldn't expect their prices to drop any time soon. The only option is to take advantage of pre-sale events or reach for an older generation.
