The age at which you can officially set up Gmail varies from country to country, as does the legislation of the parties protecting children's privacy. It is virtually impossible to obtain parental consent for every minor user who registers, which is why age restrictions have been put in place to prevent users under the age limit from creating an account.

While it is 13 years in the US and Canada, in many regions it is required to reach the age of 16. In Austria, Cyprus, Italy, Lithuania, Spain, South Korea, Peru and Venezuela, access is allowed from the age of 14. In France, Vietnam and The Czech Republic has an age limit of 15 years. Accounts created by entering real data and not meeting this criterion are blocked by the company if Google learns about it.

However, this does not mean that the child would be denied Google's offer, including Gmail or YouTube. The solution is service Family Link, through which a parent can create and manage an account for a child. Family Link therefore gives the adult, parent or guardian control, for example a limited selection of approved contacts can be set to receive and send messages, including parents, grandparents and other family members or close friends.

There are a few differences for Gmail accounts used by underage children. Google does not display commercial messages or read email content for targeted advertising within Gmail. Automatic forwarding and Gmail offline are also not available to minors. Mail that Google marks as spam won't appear in your inbox, or even your Junk folder.

The robust set of Family Link controls on offer makes it very easy to configure your children's account and set safeguards such as safe searches, downloads, purchases and screen time limits. Once the account is set up, child users are given some Gmail tips and tricks to get the most out of the service.

Even if the child is of an appropriate age, it is certainly wise to teach him about the safe use of e-mail if you decide that the time has come for him to add his e-mail inbox to the list of Google services.
