Samsung smartphone Galaxy The S III (the last of the series to use Roman numerals) was unveiled in London in early May 2012. By the time the phone was launched a month later, Samsung had collected 9 million pre-orders from hundreds of carriers worldwide.

In the first 100 days of availability, 20 million units were sold, and in November, the number of units sold reached 30 million. By the time the S III was relegated to history, 70 million were said to have been sold.

In the first days of sales, Samsung could not deliver pieces Galaxy S III to stores and operators quickly enough, which caused their shortage. This led to people reselling their S III phones on eBay at up to a 20% markup over a new device – and successfully. “This is the first time that anything other than a company product Apple created such a sales frenzy," an eBay spokesperson said at the time.

The phone's design was inspired by nature and featured a smooth, rounded surface. The plastic exterior had a fine texture reminiscent of wood grain. However, the surface was shiny and smooth, thanks to a surface treatment called Hyperglaze.

The theme of nature has also been carried over to the TouchWiz user interface, built on the system Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. By default, water ripples moved across the home screen with each touch. Samsung wanted its own Galaxy The S III also allows for natural user interaction with the phone, and therefore introduced the S Voice digital assistant.

Galaxy The S III had another clever trick – Smart Stay. It was a technology that used the front-facing camera to keep the display on while the user was looking at it. The reason why Galaxy The S III was able to track a face in real-time and constantly listen for a wake-up “Hi Galaxy”, the chipset was Exynos 4412 Quad. It contained twice as many CPU cores as the v chip Galaxy S II and additionally clocked its Mali-400 MP4 GPU much higher, achieving 60% more performance. There was also special hardware to detect the wake word.

Samsung Galaxy The S III was also the first phone with a Super AMOLED HD display – a giant 4,8″ panel for its time. It reverted to the PenTile layout (the S II's display had a full RGB strip), but the increased resolution made the display still sharper.

Thanks to the large screen and powerful chipset, Samsung decided to u Galaxy Also introduce a pop-up video player with III. Thanks to it, you could use other applications and watch a video at the same time. It was a step towards split-screen multitasking, which would be first introduced in Galaxy Note 3. In fact, this feature was later added to the Model S III as part of a system update Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Galaxy The S III was a hit for Samsung, surpassing almost every aspect of the S II (including sales). He was the first Galaxy, which outsold the iPhone and beat the 4S on its home turf. It even held its own against the iPhone 5, which was released a few months after the S III (the latest phone Apple it only surpassed it in sales in February 2013).
