eDocuments and everything you need to know about electronic ID 

We are at the gates of a new era of proving our identity. We have not needed to carry money in our wallets for a long time, when we can pay by phone or watch, now we will be able to leave it at home completely. We will have the citizenship in our mobile phone, in the eDoklady application. 

At the outset, it is worth saying that you can already find the eObčanka application in application stores. But she has almost nothing to do with eDocuments, moreover, she has been in them for over 5 long years and the comments on her account speak clearly, that is, very unflattering. eDocuments should be a modern application and will be the first to offer our citizenship in digital form, which we will be able to prove instead of the plastic card. 

For now, we are waiting, however, eDocuments should arrive already in January. After the ID, other documents should be added, however, thanks to the new legislation, we will be able to use the ID in eDocuments for road checks as well. The application will work with the Central Administrative Offices, when from July 1 this year, other state bodies, regions and municipalities with extended powers will be added. At the beginning of 2025, all other public authorities and also private individuals.

What do you need and what do you get for it? 

Actually just a smartphone with an operating system Android 11 or iOS 15 and newer together with the Citizen's Identity. You will only connect to the Internet when registering, updating your data or proving your identity at the counter. However, verification by verifiers with the mobile application will take place offline. The verifier, if it is an office, will need a smartphone or even a computer and ICU/KAAS. If he is an entrepreneur or a company, then a smartphone and a data card.

The advantages here are obvious. The main thing is that you don't have to carry a classic ID card (but you must have a charged phone). Subsequently, you will have control over to whom you actually pass on the data contained on the ID card. In addition, the entire process is extremely secure, because the ID card cannot be forged in the eDoklady application. In addition, the data is encrypted and can only be decrypted by the verifier. If you then want to give it some data to copy, you choose which ones it will be. 

For this, there is an application lock with the help of biometric data. Losing your phone will freeze, but you won't have to worry about someone getting into your eDocuments. By the way, the existing plastic ID will of course still be valid and you will be able to use it as before if you want. 

The use of the application is limited to the Czech Republic, i.e. until the end of the year. From next January, you will be able to use eDocuments at embassies abroad. The application will also be available only to citizens of the Czech Republic with a valid ID card, foreigners, even if they live in the Czech Republic, will be out of luck for now. From next year, we will also be able to prove eDocuments at elections.
