Google is always looking for new ways to introduce artificial intelligence into all its products. Its latest AI experiment aims to help users find interesting places in Maps, no matter how specific, broad or niche their query is.

Yesterday, Google announced that it is introducing a new way to the Maps app to help you find the places you want to visit. The new feature is said to rely on its large language models (LLM) to analyze information about more than 250 million posts and contributions from the community. When used, the feature will give you suggestions for places you might want to visit.

One example Google gave is looking for things to do on a rainy day. If you type "rainy day activities" into the text field, you'll get recommendations for indoor activities like comedy shows, movie theaters, and more. You will also be able to ask follow-up questions that take into account your previous question. For example, if you want to go to a place with a retro atmosphere, the function will then offer you indoor activities in places that meet this requirement.

Additionally, Google says that these results will be organized into categories. Along with these categories, you'll see "carousels" of photos and summaries of reviews of those places. And if you like where you've been, you'll also be able to save the location to a list and share it with friends. The company describes the generative AI feature as an experiment, adding that it will launch in early access this week, only in the US. However, it will only be available to selected local guides.
