When Google introduced the Pixel 8 series in October last year, it mentioned that it would provide 7 years of updates Androidu. Samsung followed it up and promises the same commitment with its current flagship series Galaxy S24. Either way, it's major competition for Apple's iPhones and theirs iOS. This is because they Android balances boldly. But what will happen next?

There is one logical step that both Google and Samsung should take, and that is to give their next devices with such long support a user-replaceable battery. 7 years is a long time and it's a certainty that the devices won't last long on one battery. Sooner or later you will have to replace it. But you will have to go to the service center for that, which is a clear complication.

A smartphone battery usually lasts about 800 charge cycles, which is two to three years of device use. After that, it typically drops to an effective value of around 80%, i.e. one that is no longer reliable for the operation of the device. It's not just that the capacity itself will decrease and the device won't last as long as before, but it will start to turn off, for example, even at the 20% charge indicator.

It's an even bigger problem with smaller phones with smaller batteries. For example Galaxy The S24 only has a 4000mAh battery, so it will suffer sooner than Galaxy S24 Ultra with 5000mAh battery capacity. Battery degradation is then one of the most common reasons to upgrade a device, regardless of its software support. It simply means that if you want z Galaxy S24 to get the maximum and you won't save it, you will replace the battery at least 2x, maybe even 3x in seven years.

Why now is the right time for replaceable batteries

But battery degradation and long software support are not the main two reasons that can convince Samsung to make its future series Galaxy The S25 was given the opportunity to replace the user's battery in the comfort of his home without unnecessary tools and other complexities. Samsung does offer a home repair program, but you can't do it without knowledge and ideal tools, so it's intended more for smaller, unauthorized service centers (it's also offered by Apple). The European Union has ordered that all smartphones have replaceable batteries by 2027.

Now Samsung only fulfills this with the Xcover series. By the way, specifically Galaxy The Xcover 6 Pro offers an IP68 resistance standard, so the removable back cover does not have any major impact on the phone's durability. Therefore, such excuses are definitely not appropriate. Logically, flexible devices that have two batteries, in both halves of the smartphone, could come across.

Having a device with an easy-to-replace battery also means you can have a spare on hand to swap out at any time without having to carry around large and heavy power banks. At the same time, such an exchange will take you disproportionately less time compared to a long wait in the service center or at the charger. But it is also important that manufacturers provide their spare parts for a sufficiently long period of time. Still, the seven-year support and the user-replaceable battery are useless to us if we don't buy it somewhere.
