Virtually every smartphone takes 12MP images, regardless of the megapixel count of its camera. Even Samsung's flagships with a 200Mx sensor save images at 12MPx resolution by default. A higher number of MPx is used as an alternative to larger sensors for better low-light photography and increased detail in the resulting image.

Even Apple's iPhones captured only and only 12MPx photos, with the iPhone 14 Pro also the 48MPx ones. But he did with the iPhone 15 Apple something new: all four iPhone 15 models take 24MP photos by default with their 48MP main cameras. Photos at this resolution allow slightly higher detail and lower noise without significantly increasing file sizes or affecting low-light performance.

Unlike Apple, Samsung hasn't added the ability to capture a 24MP image to the standard Camera app. But it has something else, and that is the Expert RAW application, i.e. an innovative application providing professional capabilities. But it is also Samsung's testing ground, in which it tests whether its innovations will catch on and deserve to be part of the native Camera. At the row Galaxy The S24 application also offers the ability to take 24MPx photos.

How to set up a 24MPx photo

So, in order to be able to take 24MPx photos, you have to z Galaxy Storu install the Expert RAW application. The fastest way to get to it is to open the Camera app, go to the more tab and tap on the name of the app at the top left. If you are reading this article on your phone, you can just tap to this link. After it is installed and started, you can see 12M at the top of the bar. When you tap on this symbol, you can choose the resolution in which you want to take photos. Apart from the 12 MPx, there is also a 24 MPx or 50 MPx.

If you choose 24 MPx, then all photos that you now capture through Expert RAW will be in 24 MPx resolution. The application remembers the setting, so you won't have to specify it again. So Samsung's latest flagships let you take 24MP photos like Apple's latest iPhones, but are there any benefits? For most users, the answer is no.

24MPx photos have slightly lower noise and therefore can retain a little extra detail compared to 12MPx photos, but you really have to zoom in a lot to see it. You can't tell one photo from another with the naked eye. This is probably why this resolution is not part of the basic application. In Expert RAW, however, this resolution has more justification, because you can shoot in RAW.
