Samsung is reportedly ramping up its augmented reality (XR) efforts. To that end, according to unofficial reports, its Mobile Experience (MX) division has created a special team called the Immersive Team to accelerate device development for the XR. This team is said to now consist of approximately 100 people and is expected to expand in the future.

Samsung is also working with Google and Qualcomm to create innovative XR devices. MX division head Noh Tae-moon recently hinted that the Korean giant, along with Google and Qualcomm, will "change the future of mobile devices by co-creating next-generation XR experiences."

According to a report from the website Hankyung, Samsung plans to introduce its XR headset later this year. It is suggested that this could happen as part of the second event this year Galaxy Unpacked, the focus of which is likely to be the new foldable smartphones Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6, but watches are also expected here Galaxy Watch7 and also the company's first smart ring Galaxy ring.

The device could use two 1,03-inch OLEDoS displays with a pixel density of around 3500 ppi, according to other reports. This microdisplay was developed by Samsung's eMagin company and was on display at this year's CES. In addition, the headset could have a Snapdragon XR2+ chipset, several cameras with a latency of only 12 ms, support for the Wi-Fi 7 standard, a powerful graphics and neural unit, a "next-gen" image processor from Qualcomm, and the software is said to run on the version Androidu adapted to augmented reality headsets.

Samsung's potential XR headset would face a lot of competition - the headset Apple Vision Pro sold 200 units in less than two weeks of sales, and it is currently only available in the US and its price is very high (starts at $3 or roughly CZK 499). Another big competitor would be Meta's Quest 82 headset, which is currently the most popular augmented reality device in terms of price and technology, with 500-3 million units sold by the end of last year, according to analyst estimates. And let's not forget that Sony is also preparing its XR headset (reportedly it will be presented in the second half of this year). If Samsung wants to succeed in the field of augmented reality, it will have to come up with a device that is not only technologically advanced, but also affordable.
