We recently brought you informace on the phones shipped in the first quarter of 2020. In it, Samsung still held the first place and could boast the title of the largest phone manufacturer. However, one month has passed and the situation is completely different. Counterpoint has now published new data that comes from April 2020. There are several factors why Samsung lost the first place.

The Chinese company Huawei took first place, which is probably not too surprising. It is also not surprising that the reduction in sales was caused by the covid-19 pandemic. Samsung is the best-seller in India, the US, Europe and South America, and all of these regions were hit by the coronavirus in April, or were just starting to spread. For a change, Huawei is the best seller in China, which was already operating relatively normally in April, while the rest of the world was in quarantine.

In addition, due to the US embargo, Huawei cannot use Google services for new phones, which has already negatively affected sales outside of China. Thanks to this, however, Huawei is focusing much more on the domestic market, where it is extremely strengthening, and as the data from April 2020 shows, it is starting to pay off in the overall ranking as well. Huawei has a 19% share of the smartphone market, while Samsung has "only" a 17% share.

Similar results are also expected in May 2020, but in the following months, Samsung should be strengthening again, as the release has gradually started and people are starting to buy. It will definitely be interesting to watch the numbers from the second quarter, which will give us an overall view of phone sales in a difficult time when almost the whole world was in quarantine.
