Worldwide shipments of televisions reached an all-time high in the third quarter of this year. Specifically, 62,05 million TV sets were shipped to global markets, which is 12,9% more than the third quarter of last year and 38,8% more than the previous quarter. This was reported by TrendForce in its latest report.

All five of the biggest brands in the industry saw an increase, i.e. Samsung, LG, TCL, Hisense and Xiaomi. The third mentioned manufacturer can boast the biggest year-on-year increase – by 52,7%. For Samsung, it was 36,4% (and 67,1% compared to the previous quarter). LG posted the smallest year-over-year increase of 6,7%, but compared to last quarter, its shipments grew the most, at 81,7%. In terms of the number of units shipped, Samsung shipped 14, LG 200, TCL 7, Hisense 940 and Xiaomi 7 in the period under review.

According to LG analysts, the historic result is due to several factors. One of them is a 20% increase in demand in North America, which is due to people spending more time at home due to the coronavirus pandemic. Another is that the result included deliveries that were delayed in the first half of the year.

Despite the significant increase in the penultimate quarter, TrendForce anticipates that deliveries for the whole of this year will be slightly lower than last year. He also points out that the price of panels is likely to continue to rise even as the average price of TVs in North America is falling, reducing the profit margin for manufacturers.
