Google has created a new emoji font called Noto Emoji, which features a black and white design that tries to capture the simplicity of the format. The once popular blobs are also returning to the scene with a new font.

The emojis of today are different from those of the past. Today's trend is detail and striving for the greatest possible realism, when emoji no longer represent broader concepts. Google is trying to counter this trend with its new open-source variable font Noto Emoji. It aims to make emoticons "more flexible to represent the idea of something instead of what's specifically in front of you." E.g. today, the dance emoji represents only one form of dance at the expense of other types.

While many of the new emoticons, according to Google, were created by a simple 1:1 conversion or minor modification of existing ones, he had more work to do with others, for example with flags, for which a simple redrawing in black and white is not enough. As for people, they are represented by Google blobs in Noto Emoji. Because it's a variable font, emojis can appear "light" or "bold". There are also light and dark modes and the ability to change the color of the text or character. In total, the new font includes 3663 emoticons and you can download it here.
