Samsung logoBratislava, 12. January 2015 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a world leader in advanced memory technology, has begun production high-performance, low-power PCIe SSDs named SM951. They are intended for use in ultra-thin notebook computers and workstations. The Samsung SM951 will be available with capacities 512, 256 and 128 GB.

“By introducing this energy-efficient, high-speed PCIe SSD, we are helping to accelerate the growth of the ultra-thin notebook market. We also want to continue to develop and introduce next-generation SSDs featuring high density, improved performance and increased resolution, and together with the team, strengthen our business competitiveness in the global SSD market.” said Jeeho Baek, Senior Vice President of Memory Marketing at Samsung Electronics.

Performance in the PCIe 2.0 interface

The Samsung SM951 excels with above-standard performance. It supports as an interface PCIe 3.0, So PCIe 2.0. It can be used in the latest ultra-thin notebooks read sequentially at 1 MB/s a write 1 MB/s based on PCIe 2.0. Such performance is approx three times higher than the latest SSD with SATA interface and about 30% faster than its predecessor Samsung XP941. In addition, random read and write speeds of up to 130 000, respectively. 85 IOPS.

Performance in the PCIe 3.0 interface

For users of ultra-thin notebooks and workstations planning to adopt the PCIe 3.0 interface, the SM951 can read and write sequentially at speeds 2 MB / s, respectively. 1 MB / s. It thus provides approx four times faster sequential reading compared to current SATA SSDs. At the same time, it achieves significantly higher energy efficiency in the PCIe 3.0 interface – it requires about len one watt at 450 MB/s sequential reading and at 250 MB/s sequential writing. It means more than 50% improvement in performance per watt compared to the XP941 SSD.

Standby mode L1.2

The Samsung SM951 is the first SSD to use standby mode according to PCI-SIG (PCIe standard). L1.2 with low energy consumption. It allows all high-speed circuitry to be turned off when the computer is in sleep or hibernate mode. By adopting standby operation at the L1.2 level, drastically reduces energy consumption SM951 – below 2 mW, What is down 97% (from the 50 mW required when used at L1 level).

M.2 format

The new Samsung SM951 SSD is manufactured in M.2 format (80mm x 22mm) which is just about one-seventh the size of 2,5-inch SSDs. At the same time, it weighs approx 6 grams. Thanks to its compact design, it is suitable for most laptops and frees up space for other components, including the battery.

The latest SM951 drive and other PCIe SSDs that use the 10-nanometer class MLC NAND platform put Samsung in an excellent position to rapidly expand the global PCIe SSD market. Samsung will continue to work on the timely introduction of a new generation of PCIe SSDs that support the NVMe interface, providing further performance gains.
