Samsung is not just a manufacturer of mobile devices, washing machines or refrigerators, it is the third largest conglomerate in the world by revenue. The South Korean technology giant also includes the company Samsung SDI, which mainly deals with the development of batteries for mobile devices, smart watches, wireless headphones and also for electric cars. According to the latest reports, this company is investing around 39 million dollars (almost one billion Czech crowns) in the EcoPro EM project for the production of materials for the cathodes of electric car batteries.

EcoPro EM is a joint project between Samsung and EcoPro BM. EcoPro BM is engaged in the production of materials for battery cathodes). The total value of the investment will be approximately 96,9 million dollars (over two billion Czech crowns), the greater part of this amount will be financed by EcoPro BM itself, thereby earning a 60% share in the joint project, Samsung will control 40%.

Before the end of this year, according to the agreement, the construction of a plant for the processing of materials for the production of cathodes should be started in the city of Pohang in South Korea. The actual production of materials for the production of NCA battery cathodes (nickel, cobalt, aluminum) should then begin in the first quarter of 2022.

A lithium-ion battery consists of four main parts – a separator, an electrolyte, an anode and the aforementioned cathode. Samsung decided to invest this considerable amount in its own company, probably in order to become more independent in terms of the production of batteries for electric cars, and not have to rely on other suppliers. The main income of Samsung SDI is the production of cells for electric cars. Recently, for example, Samsung concluded a contract for the supply of batteries for electric cars and hybrids with the manufacturer Hyundai.
