The global market for refurbished smartphones rose in popularity last year and exceeded all expectations. He kept the lead Apple, it was followed by Samsung, which, however, reduced the Cupertino giant's lead.

According to analyst firm Counterpoint Research, the refurbished smartphone market grew by 2020% last year compared to 15, while the new phone market grew by just 4,5%. The company attributes this market shift towards used devices to the high prices of high-end smartphones and the greater willingness of customers to consider buying refurbished models from popular brands such as Samsung or Apple.

The fastest growing markets for refurbished smartphones were China, India, South America, Southeast Asia and Africa. Among these countries and regions, India and South American countries have seen the highest growth and also have the highest growth potential for the next few years.

According to Counterpoint, shipments of refurbished Samsung phones grew faster than those from Apple's workshop last year, but specific market shares were not disclosed. Apple has maintained its lead, but the Korean tech giant's used phones boast a higher rate of acceptance among customers. No wonder Samsung offers one of the best trade-in programs.

Samsung may continue to gain more ground in this area this year. In mid-April, pre-orders opened in the US for refurbished, or in the words of the Korean giant, "renewed" phones of the series Galaxy S21. Samsung also recently announced a partnership with the company iFixit, which will soon allow customers (for now only in the US) to repair their smartphones at home Galaxy. However, a similar program also has Apple and Google too, for that matter. So it can be seen that ecology plays a vital role for big brands and is not just a pose.
