As part of the opening keynote for the Google I/O22 developer conference, the company said and showed a lot. Among the expected news was the launch of the Pixel 6a phone, which we finally got to see. The phone comes with a number of changes compared to the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro models, and of course it also cuts the price.

Glass and metal are replaced in favor of a recycled aluminum frame, the back is polycarbonate. The front is dominated by a 6,1" FHD+ OLED display with a resolution of 2 x 340 pixels and a frequency of 1 Hz. It's worth noting that the Pixel 080a is the first affordable phone from Google to include an in-display fingerprint sensor for biometric security. The screen is also coated with Corning Gorilla Glass 60, which is the same generation of glass that was on last year's Pixel 6a.

Tensor even at a lower price

Although the Pixel 6a is being marketed as a mid-range alternative to the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, the device still uses Google's flagship Tensor chip. Like the flagship models, the Pixel 6a features the Titan M2 security coprocessor, making the device one of the most secure available Android phones. The Tensor is paired with 6GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage along with a 4306mAh battery with fast charging support. Google claims up to 72 hours on a single charge when using Extreme Battery Saver mode. The 3,5mm headphone jack is missing.

The main camera is a wide-angle 12,2MPx and is complemented by a 12MPx ultra-wide-angle. Should be Sony IMX363 and IMX386 (Pixels 6 had 50MPx ISOCELL GN1). On the front, there is a hole in the middle of the display containing the 8MPx selfie camera Sony IMX355. There is no shortage of 4K videos at up to 60 fps. Google has committed to 6 years of updates for the Pixel 3a Androidand a total of 5 years of security updates. So Samsung is still better in this regard.

The Pixel 6a goes on sale from July 21 in three colors: black, mint green and grey/silver. Its price is set at 449 dollars, i.e. less than 11 thousand CZK (tax must be added). But availability will initially be limited to the US and Japan, with other regions including Australia, Canada, the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Ireland, Spain and Singapore coming later.
