You might have thought Google Talk, the company's original instant messaging service from 2005, was long dead, but the chat app has continued to exist in some form for the past few years. But now its time has finally come: Google has announced that it will be officially discontinued this week.

The service has been inaccessible through standard routes for the past few years, but it has been possible to use it through third-party app support in services like Pidgin and Gajim. But this support will end on June 16. Google recommends using Google Chat as an alternative service.

Google Talk was the company's first ever instant messaging service and was originally designed for quick conversations between Gmail contacts. It later became a cross-device app with Androidem and BlackBerry. In 2013, Google began phasing out the service and moving users to other messaging apps. At the time, it served as a replacement for Google Hangouts.

However, the operation of this service was also eventually terminated, while the main replacement for it was the aforementioned Google Chat application. If you're still using Google Talk through any third-party apps, you'll need to make changes to your settings as soon as possible to ensure you don't lose your data or contacts.
