It's been four years since Samsung launched its first TVs with microLED technology. At that time, they were recommended for the corporate sphere. Those intended for households were introduced a year later. Over the past few years, Samsung has managed to reduce both their price and size.

Now The Elec website informs, that Samsung has started mass production of 89-inch microLED TVs, which means they should hit the market late this year or early next year. The website also claims that the Korean giant is using LTPS TFT glass substrates instead of existing printed circuit boards to produce the new microLED TVs. These substrates should reduce the pixel size and overall cost of TVs.

Samsung was originally expected to start production of the 89-inch TVs as early as this spring, but the plan was delayed due to supply chain issues and low yields. Their price should be around 80 thousand dollars (just under two million CZK).

MicroLED TVs are similar to OLED TVs in that each pixel offers its own light and color, but the material is not made using an organic material. These TVs thus have the picture quality of an OLED screen and the long life of an LCD display. However, it is quite difficult to produce them, so their price remains very high, out of the reach of the average consumer. Experts expect that when this technology matures enough in the future, it will replace both LCD and OLED.
