Samsung may be slowly learning that there's more to great photos than just megapixels. When Galaxy S22 Ultra we saw a resolution of 40MPx for its front camera, but Samsung Galaxy The S23 Ultra selfie camera is supposed to be "only" 12MPx. And it doesn't have to be harmful.

Initially, it was speculated that only basic models would get this camera Galaxy S23 and S23+, but according to the latest information, it will also go to the most equipped model of the series. In the case of the basic models, this would be an overall upgrade, because their older generation in the submission Galaxy The S22 and S22+ use 10MPx sensors. But the Ultra has 40 MPx, which could logically look like it will get worse. But in the final, it could be a positive change.

Means Galaxy S23 Ultra selfie change of direction?

As for the number of MPx, Samsung has been trying for a long time to have a device that will have the largest number of them. AT Galaxy The S22 Ultra has a 108MP main camera and a 40MP selfie camera. These Samsung-made sensors are indeed capable of producing extremely detailed photos, but they no longer take the best pictures among mobile phones, and they also don't do much with scene fidelity. Leaderboards DXOMark with regard to the overall rating, it belongs to phones with fewer MPx – 7th place belongs to, for example, the iPhone 13 Pro with only 12MPx resolution of its cameras, Galaxy The S22 Ultra is up to the 14th position.

Megapixels aren't everything. This was and still is the case regardless of how much credit artificial intelligence and the manufacturer's algorithms have for the result. Samsung usually makes the resulting photos from its phones a bit brighter and more saturated, which can certainly be beneficial in some scenarios, but of course it's a hindrance in others. But if Samsung u Galaxy The S23 Ultra has switched to a lower resolution selfie camera, this could indicate an impending change in its direction. In the case of small sensors, the pursuit of an ever-higher number of megapixels does not make the result very good.

Is more really better?

Of course, the above strategy totally hits home with the main camera, which Samsung in the case of the model Galaxy The S23 Ultra raises the resolution from 108 to 200 MPx. But there's more room for the rear camera, the company can make it bigger and play more with pixel stacking, which is limited by the physically small front camera. Nobody wants to have an aperture as big as the main wide-angle camera. In the case of the selfie camera, Samsung rather chooses a compromise, but does not want to compromise on the main one.

We are definitely not afraid of Samsung experimenting unnecessarily. He has enough experience to know what he's doing. Therefore, we are not deterred by more or less MPx and we believe that both will have their benefits. After all, Samsung will certainly explain to us why it does the way it does at its Unpacked event, which is already planned for February 1.
