YouTube will be changing the way some ads are displayed in videos very soon. Specifically, they will stop showing overlay ads from next month.

YouTube overlays are banner-style pop-up ads that often interrupt or obscure the currently playing content. The platform said it will remove these ads from videos, v contribution on the YouTube Help forum. In it, he refers to them as an "older ad format" that is "distracting" to viewers. It's worth noting that this option is no longer available in the mobile version of YouTube, where it has been replaced by pre-, mid- and post-roll advertising, which can often be skipped.

In addition, the platform said that the removal of overlay ads will have a "limited impact" on creators. Without elaborating further, she added that there would be a shift towards "other advertising formats". Since desktop platforms are the only place where overlay ads appear, these "other ad formats" may account for a smaller proportion of ads served on monetized content.

As of April 6th, it will no longer be possible to activate or add overlay ads from YouTube Studio when accessing monetization options. It's unclear what Google will replace these pop-up ads with, but the "other ad formats" mentioned could include the recently introduced product tagging feature, which allows creators to tag products used or captured in videos.
