The Samsung Free application has been with us since One UI 3.0, even though it came practically out of nowhere and without any major information about what it actually is. It's ending now. Well, not completely, but a new title is born from it.

Samsung Free is a content aggregator that brings together live TV, podcasts, news articles and interactive games in one place. As the name suggests, all the content that the app offers is free. It can also be opened by swiping left on the home screen. It has now been renamed Samsung News.

Samsung News brings an updated experience that combines the Read and Listen tabs. It will also focus more on news content, making it easier for users to find and interact with news. Bookmarks will no longer be available as part of this rebranding Watch (Watch) and Play (Play), which is another sign that the Korean giant wants to focus primarily on news for the old service. The service will continue to offer free TV content and games through the Samsung TV Plus and Game Launcher apps.

It's pretty clear that Samsung wants users to see the service as a competitor to Google's Discover channel. Whether that will really be the case remains to be seen. The service will be available after the Samsung Free app is updated to version 6.0.1. Samsung is going to gradually roll out this update from April 18.
