According to a recent survey by IDC released via CNET, smartphone sales will continue to be low in 2023, with around 1,17 billion smartphones shipped worldwide this year, a 3,2% decrease from last year. This is due to current economic conditions around the world, but also to the fact that consumer demand for smartphones is recovering much more slowly than previously thought.

In that light, Samsung is moving in the right direction by focusing on foldable phones like these Galaxy From Flip4 and Galaxy From Fold4. According to the forecast, the share of deliveries of folding smartphones will increase, which could improve the Korean giant. Samsung is also expected to launch two new foldable phones Galaxy From Flip5 and Galaxy From Fold5, probably already at the end of July 2023.

Google also introduced its first foldable phone this year, as well as other brands, including Honor, Huawei, Motorola, OPPO, Tecno, Vivo and Xiaomi. The first foldable OnePlus should also see the light of day this year, while we will probably have to wait another year for the iPhone.

Global Smartphone Shipment Forecast 2023 to 2027

Research Director of IDC Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers, Nabila Popalová said: “If 2022 was the year of excess inventory, 2023 is the year of caution. Everyone wants to have stocks ready to ride the wave of the inevitable recovery, but no one wants to hold onto them for too long. It also means that brands that take risks – at the right time – can potentially reap big rewards.” Although 2023 will probably not bring very encouraging sales numbers overall, next year sales should see a year-on-year increase in smartphone shipments of 6%.

The outlook for 2027 assumes that shipments will reach nearly 1,4 billion units and the average selling price will drop from $421 in 2023 to $377 in 2027. So it's understandable that companies are investing in development and trying to keep the customer in their ecosystem . In the case of Samsung, the company is expanding its offer to other products in the world Galaxy, as Galaxy Buds, Galaxy books, Galaxy Watch and various smart home devices or appliances compatible with SmartThings.
